Bahpeyx was five turns old when he lost his father - his fathers, his brother's sire along with his own. He was six when he lost his grandfather - and just shy of seven when his mother sent he and his brothers to the Guild. But Bahpeyx was strong enough in mind and body to keep any anguish to himself. He cried, they all did, every time they lost something new. But he didn't really cry much after those things were no longer fresh in his mind. He started out his Guild life as a gopher, essentially too young to learn much more than a few figures or ballads here and there, but he was quite good with running around the halls. What better use to put a young boy who has plenty of energy, than as a runner for messages? He quickly learned the ins and outs of the entire Guild complex - from its highest halls to the dimmest store rooms. And such was his memory for these things, that he often found himself idly doodling the paths from here to there in the sand pits when there were no students around. One of the Masters noticed the precision with which he inscribed those halls lines, how he'd invented his own method of describing ramps versus stairs, hidden areas and open halls. At eleven, Bahpeyx was fully admitted to the Cartographers area of the Guild hall, doing something he really enjoyed, and further, allowed to wander where he would - without being punished! And the trips he could take! There were journeys up and down the coast, and even though he played as safe as he could on a ship - he was never as intensely afraid of the ocean as his brother, Bahpeyx took to the sea again with an intellectual curiosity that made his Masters extremely happy. He helped plumb depths, plot reefs, and note where volcanic activity would erupt. And make maps... Oh did he make maps. Though he did have to learn the more conventional symbols for things he showed the Masters, he kept his old methods for private maps. His letters back to his mother were less expertly scribbled, but all equally loving. By the time he was old enough to put Journeyman's knots on his shoulders, Search riders had come to the Guild and chosen not just him, but his two brothers! They would be together, and Bahpeyx realized that upon a dragon's back, he could map so much more than on a ship or in a caravan! He eagerly awaited their time before the eggs at Shintaru Weyrhold. *** Their brother Ph'ron impressed first, but then it appeared the eggs had all gone, and thus Bitaplan and Bahpeyx were moved by their driends at Dragonhope to a new... well an old Weyr, Aneris by name. Perhaps there, they would find their way. If not, both were still remarkably adept. Bahpeyx however, had started to learn more and more about those star charts that the riders used to travel between. His eye for detail was aided by the glass crafters at Dragonhope, they offered him a spyglass which he could place over one amber eye, and jot down his notes at the same time. He realized his own excitement when he asked, "can it be fitted on a riding helmet?" Of course, that meant he would have to be a rider for a helmet to make any sense! |
